"The Letter" Analysis

Ini ni, beberapa waktu yang lalu dapet tugas buat bikin analisis ringan tentang cerpen "The Letter" dari mata kuliah Introduction to English Literature. Engga sempurna sih, tp ya pengen aja gitu ngeshare :)

THE LETTER

A.    Intrinsic Elements

The intrinsic elements that consist of Theme, plot, character, setting and point of view are the elements that are participating in forming a story in literary work.

1.      Theme

“The conviction of a mother to find out her daughter who was missing”

2.      Plot

It used the mixed plot is the mixture between progressive plot and

flashback plot.

The progressive plot is shown in the process when “I” tried to send the letter to Elaine, and finally she got a call from Elaine which told her that Elaine would be home.

The flashback plot is shown in the letter from the mother to Elaine, because it told about Elaine in the past.

3.      Character

a.       I as the aunt

-          Doubly person (She was not sure whether she should mail the letter or not, although finally she mailed the letter.

b.      The mother

-          Strong people, never give up on anything

c.       Elaine

-          Curious person (Try to meet the aunt first, rather than to meet the writer of the letter, her mother)

4.      Setting

a.       Setting of place

-          In the bus

-          In the yard (when the aunt got a call from Elaine)

b.      Setting of time

-          In the morning, in the afternoon

5.      Point of View

It used the first person point of view (participant).

6.      Conflict

The conflict in the story is when the aunt was not sure whether she should mail the letter or not.

7.      Solution

However, after some consideration, she mailed the letter. Then, Elaine called her and told her that she would be home.

B.     The story

The story is about a mother who missed her daughter whom was separated with her because some reasons. Then, the mother wrote a letter to her and asked her sister to mail the letter. However, the sister was not sure that the letter would work. After some consideration, she finally mailed the letter. The last, she got a call from Elaine, the missing daughter. Elaine told her that she would to meet her aunt and be home sooner.
