A.    Intrinsic Elements
The intrinsic elements that consist of Theme, plot, character, setting and point of view are the elements that are participating in forming a story in literary work.
1.      Theme
“The first confession of a young boy”
2.      Plot
It used progressive plot.
The progressive plot is shown in the process when the process of Jackie’s confession and finally he did the confession.
3.      Characters
a.       Jackie
-          Jealous person, when his grandma gave some pennies to his sister, Nora
-          honest person, in the end he faces his fears of going to confession and learns to tell the truth even if he is ashamed of it
-          Temperamental, when he tried to kill his sister with butter knife.
b.      Nora
-          Jealous person, becomes aggravated with Jackie because after all those years of being bad, his only punishment from the priest was three Hail Marys
c.       Grandma
-          Peculiar (strange) person, for dinner she had a jug of a porter and a pot of potatoes with some-times-a bit of salt fish, and she poured out the potatoes on the table and ate them slowly, with great relish, using her fingers by way of a fork.
d.      Father and mother
-          Busy people
e.       The Priest
-          Friendly
4.      Setting
a.       Setting of place
-          In the home
-          In the church
b.      Setting of time
-          In the morning, in the afternoon, in the night
5.      Point of View
It used the first person point of view (participant).
6.      Conflict
The conflict in the story is when Jackie was ashamed to do his first confession.
7.      Solution
Finally, Jackie did the first confession.
B.     The story
The story is about a young boy seven years old, getting ready for his first confession in the Catholic Church. He is scared of this confession because he wants to kill his grandmother, who has recently moved in with the family, and also tried to kill his sister with a butter knife. He blames his grandmother for all the recent troubles in the family and can only see his confession being bad, and if he told a bad confession he would burn in the flames of hell. During his confession he admits to all his sins, in the end he is rewarded for this honesty by becoming friends with the priest.
